Upcycling Denim - Mix it up using old Jeans with new, modern ways to use them

There is no shortage of denim to be found in our closets, at the mall or even at the thrift store. A while back I spoke with Radha Weaver of the Sewing Through Fog Blog about sustainability and fashion (link to the video above) and her work at Levi's prior to her new endeavors. I am very inspired by her work and have been following along with her denim upcycling adventures. And you should too. She is absolutely fantastic.

Denim is a wonderful fabric to work with. It's such a durable and long lasting fiber and it gets more interesting over time after being washed and worn. The texture and color variations add a richness to its utilitarian origins.

Some of my favorite ways to reuse denim:

  1. Quilting or quilt piecing (a la Sewing Through Fog)

  2. Making bags

  3. Making pillows

  4. Patchworking into new fabric

  5. Weaving (also a la Sewing Through Fog)

  6. Applique and reverse applique
