Sewing It Up: Choosing the Right Fabric, Trims & Notions for Your Project
Whether you're sewing your first garment or your fiftieth, success always starts with the right materials. Once you’ve selected a pattern, the next—and arguably most crucial—step is choosing the correct fabric, trims, and notions.
Let’s walk through that process:
1. Start with the Pattern
Your pattern is your blueprint. Flip to the back of the envelope or instruction sheet to find a list of suggested fabrics. These recommendations aren’t just suggestions—they’re tested options that will behave well with the design. If your pattern calls for light-to-medium-weight wovens like cotton lawn or poplin, resist the temptation to swap in something stretchy unless you understand how it might affect the fit and drape.
2. Woven vs. Knit: Know the Difference
Woven fabrics are created by weaving threads over and under each other, creating a stable, structured material. Think denim, chambray, or linen.
Knit fabrics, on the other hand, are made by looping threads together—imagine a T-shirt or hoodie. They’re stretchy, comfy, and great for fitted garments or athleisure wear.
Understanding the difference will help you avoid some classic sewing mishaps, like puckering seams or saggy hems.
3. Trims and Notions: Small Pieces, Big Impact
Many patterns call for extras—zippers, buttons, lace, ribbon, or elastic. These are your trims. You’ll also need notions, which include functional items like thread and interfacing.
Interfacing is the unsung hero of garment structure. It’s what gives shape to collars, cuffs, and waistbands. Choose from fusible (iron-on) or sew-in, and in woven, knit, or non-woven varieties, depending on your fabric and pattern.
Thread might seem like a small detail, but it matters. All-purpose polyester thread is great for most garments. We love brands like Gütermann and Mettler for their strength and color range. Sometimes, the best choice is simply the one that matches your fabric color perfectly.
4. Ask for Help
Still unsure what to pick? Fabric store clerks are often seasoned sewists themselves—don’t hesitate to ask questions! And of course, we’re always happy to help guide you at The Sewing Room.
Choosing the right materials sets you up for a smoother sewing experience and a more polished final piece. Don’t rush this step—enjoy the process of dreaming up your creation and selecting the components that will bring it to life.
